» Vitamin B Complex includes thiamine (vitamin B1), riboflavin (vitamin B2), niacin (vitamin B3), pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), pyridoxine (vitamin B6), biotin, folic acid and the cobalamins (vitamin B12). choline, inositol, and para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), even though they are not essential vitamins. Each member of the B-complex has a unique structure and performs unique functions in the human body. Vitamins B1, B2, B3, and biotin participate in different aspects of energy production; vitamin B6 is essential for amino acid metabolism; and vitamin B12 and folic acid facilitate steps required for cell division. Each of these vitamins has many additional functions.

» Folic Acid is needed for DNA synthesis. DNA allows cells—including cells in the fetus when a woman is pregnant—to replicate normally. Adequate intake of folic acid early in pregnancy is important for preventing most neural tube birth defects and may also protect against some birth defects of the arms, legs, and heart. Folic acid is needed to make SAMe (S-adenosyl-L-methionine), which affects (and may improve) mood. Folic acid is also needed to keep homocysteine (an amino acid) levels in blood from rising. Excess homocysteine has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease in most studies and may also be linked to osteoporosis, strokes, and Alzheimer’s disease.

The body uses Vitamin B3 (Niacin) in the process of releasing energy from carbohydrates. It’s needed to form fat from carbohydrates and to process alcohol. The Niacin form of vitamin B3 also regulates cholesterol. Vitamin B3 comes in two basic forms—niacin (also called nicotinic acid) and niacinamide (also called nicotinamide

» Pantothenic Acid, sometimes called Vitamin B5, is involved in the Kreb’s cycle of energy production and is needed to make the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. It is also essential in producing, transporting, and releasing energy from fats. Synthesis of cholesterol (needed for vitamin D and hormone synthesis) depends on pantothenic acid. Pantothenic acid also activates the adrenal glands, lower blood levels of cholesterol and triglycerides. Helps acne, athletic performance and sinusitis.

» Vitamin B12 is needed for normal nerve cell activity, DNA replication, and production of the mood-affecting substance called SAMe (S-adenosyl-L-methionine). Vitamin B12 works with folic acid to control homocysteine levels. An excess of homocysteine, which is an amino acid (protein building block), may increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and perhaps osteoporosis and Alzheimer’s disease. Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause fatigue, and some research indicates that individuals who are not deficient in this vitamin have increased energy after injections of vitamin B12. Helps fight depression, artheriosclerosis, Crohn’s disease, tinnitus, and HIV.

» Vitamin B6 is the master vitamin in the processing of amino acids—the building blocks of all proteins and some hormones. Vitamin B6 helps to make and take apart many amino acids and is also needed to make serotonin, melatonin, and dopamine. Vitamin B6 also aids in the formation of several neurotransmitters and is therefore an essential nutrient in the regulation of mental processes and possibly mood. To some extent, vitamin B6 lowers homocysteine levels—a substance that has been linked to heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer’s disease. Aids autism, celiac disease, depression, kidney stones, morning sickness, premenstrual syndrome.

» Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) is needed to process carbohydrates, fat, and protein. Every cell of the body requires vitamin B1 to form ATP—the fuel the body runs on. Nerve cells require vitamin B1 in order to function normally. Wheat germ, whole wheat, peas, beans, so-called enriched flour, fish, peanuts, and meat are all good sources of vitamin B1. Vitamin B1 has been used in connection with the following conditions: Canker sores (mouth ulcers) Diabetes Fibromyalgia HIV support Minor injuries Multiple sclerosis
