» White Willow’s Latin name is the source of the name for acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin), as well as the parent compound from which aspirin was eventually created. Willow bark was used traditionally for fever, headache, pain, and rheumatic complaints. The glycoside salicin, from which the body can split off salicylic acid, is a source of the anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving actions of willow. The analgesic actions of willow are typically slow acting but last longer than standard aspirin products. One study has found that a combination herbal product including 100 mg white willow bark improved functioning via pain relief in people with osteoarthritis.

» Boswellin, according to studies, is shown to have an anti-inflammatory action—much like the conventional nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) used for inflammatory conditions. Boswellin inhibits pro-inflammatory mediators in the body, such as leukotrienes. As opposed to NSAIDs, long-term use of boswellia does not lead to irritation or ulceration of the stomach. Controlled, double blind studies have shown that boswellia extracts are very helpful for ulcerative colitis.

» Bromelain is an anti-inflammatory agent and for this reason is helpful in healing minor injuries, particularly sprains and strains, muscle injuries, and the pain, swelling, and tenderness that accompany sports injuries. Also as a result of its anti-inflammatory effect, bromelain has been found to dramatically reduce postoperative swelling in controlled human research. Double blind research has found bromelain effective in reducing swelling, bruising and pain for women having minor surgery after giving birth (episiotomy). The anti-inflammatory effect of bromelain is the probable reason this enzyme has been found effective for people suffering from sinusitis.

» Boldo contains several types of primary constituents, including volatile oils (e.g., ascaridole, eucalyptol), flavonoids, and alkaloids. Boldine, which constitutes about one-fourth of the total number of alkaloids present, is said to be the major alkaloid. Scientists believe that boldine is responsible for the plant’s choloretic (bile stimulating) and diuretic actions. In conjunction with other herbs, such as cascara, rhubarb, and gentian, boldo has been reported to improve symptoms related to loss of appetite.

» Astragalus was classified by  Shen Nung, the founder of Chinese herbal medicine, as a superior herb in his classical treatise Shen Nung Pen Tsao Ching (circa A.D. 100). The Chinese name huang qi translates as “yellow leader,” referring to the yellow color of the root and its status as one of the most important tonic herbs. Traditional Chinese medicine used this herb for night sweats, deficiency of chi (e.g., fatigue, weakness, and loss of appetite), and diarrhea. Astragalus contains numerous components, including flavonoids, polysaccharides, triterpene glycosides (e.g., astragalosides I–VII), amino acids, and trace minerals. Preliminary test tube studies show that astragalus may help restore some immune activity in cancer patients. It has shown efficacy as a diuretic and treatment for congestive heart syndrome in animal studies.
