» Echinacea was used by Native Americans for a variety of conditions, including venomous bites and other external wounds. It was introduced into U.S. medical practice in 1887 and was touted for use in conditions ranging from colds to syphilis. Modern research started in the 1930s in Germany. Echinacea also increases production of interferon, an important part of the body’s response to viral infection such as colds and the flu. Echinacea is believed to work primarily by activating white blood cells, as mentioned above. Several double blind studies have confirmed the benefit of echinacea for treating and preventing colds and flu. Recommended dose: One A Day.

» Garlic is mentioned in the Bible and the Talmud. Hippocrates, Galen, Pliny the Elder, and Dioscorides all mention the use of garlic for many conditions, including parasites, respiratory problems, poor digestion, and low energy. Its use in China was first mentioned in A.D. 510. Louis Pasteur confirmed the antibacterial action of garlic in 1858.

» Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that functions as a powerful antioxidant. Acting as an antioxidant, one of vitamin C’s important functions is to protect LDL cholesterol from oxidative damage. Vitamin C is needed to make collagen, the “glue” that strengthens many parts of the body. It reduces the duration and severity of a cold.

» Zinc shortens the duration of cold symptoms for adults in most double blind studies using proper methodology, though this effect has not been reported in children. Most successful studies have used zinc gluconate or zinc gluconate-glycine lozenges containing 15–25 mg of zinc per lozenge. Zinc lozenges are not to be taken long term, but rather only at the onset of a cold and stopped when symptoms have disappeared.

» Astragalus was classified a superior herb by Shen Nung, the founder of Chinese herbal medicine, in his classical treatise Shen Nung Pen Tsao Ching (circa A.D. 100). The Chinese name huang qi translates as “yellow leader,” referring to the yellow colour of the root and its status as one of the most important tonic herbs. Traditional Chinese medicine used this herb for night sweats, deficiency of chi (e.g., fatigue, weakness, and loss of appetite), and diarrhea. Preliminary test tube studies show that astragalus may help restore some immune activity in cancer patients. It has shown efficacy as a diuretic and treatment for congestive heart syndrome in animal studies.
